Chrétien Breukers was born on 28th March 1965 in the Limburg village of Leveroy, at half past nine in the morning, just before high mass – making this a Sunday. On the very same day Czech writer Bohumil Hrabal turned 51, something Breukers was still unaware of those first few days.

Breukers wrote his first poems at the start of the Eighties, influenced by the work of Adriaan Roland Holst, who he is still partial to. It would take until 1990 for him to make his debut, in magazine De Tweede Ronde. He was to publish in many more magazines, such as Maatstaf, Optima, Hollands Maandblad, Bunker Hill, de Poëziekrant and Zwart IJs.

Breukers lives with visual artist Nicole Montagne, in Utrecht, and has two daughters: Martha (2000) and (2003).
