Roger Debreukere was born on that cloud-free summer's day, 26th July 1966, in the Flemish town of Aarschot. He studied medicine in Louvain. He lives and works as a doctor for Medecins Sans Frontieres, alternating between Malines (Belgium) and Kinshasa (Zaire). Debreukere has already published a novella De zomer die nog komen moest bij (The Summer Yet to Come; Hautekiet 1993), and a book of short stories De Hollandse dame en andere verhalen (The Dutch Lady and Other Stories) also with Hautekiet (1994). In 1993 a couple of his poems and stories were published in 'MillenniuM tijdboek van de Kunstgroep Lage Landen', an art and literature magazine. He wrote a play 'The emperor' for theatre group Dinska Bronska, and 'Ahasverus' for the same company. Poems by Debreukere appeared in magazines 'Verschillig', 'Revolver' and 'De Brakke Hond'. Bebreukere is secretary of the Patrice Lumumba Foundation in Belgium.
