92 SQUADRON - Fighter, Supermarine Spitfire Mk. I

History | Operations and losses | Sources | Links | Books | Questions and/or remarks

On 10 October 1939, No 92 reformed at Tangmere and received Blenheims. In March 1940, these were replaced by Spitfires which became operational on 9 May and flew patrols over France during May and June before being sent to South Wales for defensive duties.

From 10 May, Spitfire squadrons were authorised to carry out offensive patrols across the Channel. Spitfires first met Bf-109s and Bf-110s on 23 May: two of each type of Messerschmitt were lost, as were three Spitfires of 92 Squadron.

In September it was transferred to No 11 Group for the final phase of the Battle of Britain.
